My top 5 portfolio tips – Animation

Do you want to know more about how to improve your portfolio for specific job areas within game development?  In our brand-new Portfolio Tips series, we let our experts share their top 5 tips on how to do just that! Here’s 5 portfolio tips from Zsolt Avery-Tierney, Animation Director.

1. QUALITY BEFORE QUANTITY

When applying to Massive your Animation portfolio should not be focused on quantity, it primarily needs to demonstrate a good eye for quality.

This means carefully curating your reel and removing any pieces that detract from showing us what quality means to you.

2. SHOW YOU UNDERSTAND THE FUNDAMENTALS

In terms of content, I think demonstrating Animation fundamentals is always nice – but Game Development fundamentals is even better!

Showing that you know your way around feature components, or the elements of a cinematic moment is a great way to convey expertise.

3. SHOW YOUR PASSION

The type of content you include should be applicable to the role and project, but ultimately you should always aim to show us what makes you passionate.

4. START AND END ON A HIGH NOTE

In terms of presentation, a good tip here is to ensure that your reel starts and ends on a high note.  As with much in life, first and last impressions really count.

5. VISUALS > AUDIO

If you rely on the audio cue to make your shot selection and timing work – many reels will be reviewed without audio – so always put 100% of your effort into the visual!
